“Real life” math better than studying a workbook

Will you be able to handle high school algebra if you’re already struggling with middle school math and fractions?  Probably not.  A new program aims to help students by using real life examples in place of worksheets.

The program is called “4 Real Math.”  It uses activities to teach such concepts as fractions and equations. For example, in teaching equations about distance, students actually run a timed 40-yard dash.  Other activities include shooting baskets, eating pizza, and bowling.

“With the story and basketball, it’s easier for me.  Instead of doing worksheets, we’re outside playing games,” commented Anissa, a 7th-grader at Gilmore Middle School in Wisconsin.

Do you think it would be easier to learn by doing something physical rather than reading from a book?  Sort of like “on-the-job training” that you’ll experience in the workforce when you get older. Or is a combination of book-learning and real-life exercises the best way to learn and remember what you did?
