Coming up on January 24, 2011 is the beginning of No Name-Calling Week. This is a week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and bullying in our communities.

The national project targets students from kindergarten through grade 12. It started in 2004 and now includes over 40 national organizations including Barnes and Noble, GLSEN and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.

No Name-Calling Week was inspired by a young adult novel called “The Misfits” by James Howe. It tells the story of several friends trying to survive 7th grade in the face of frequent harassment due to their intelligence, sexual orientation and appearance.  We will tell you more about “The Misfits” in the March, 2011 Great Reads selection.

For more information about this event and how to get involved, go to:  www.nonamecallingweek.org

In response to Cassidy Andel’s suicide in November 2010, the North Dakota legislature is considering a bill that calls for a statewide “No Name Calling Day.”

Check out the video below of the students at City High School talk about the importance of National No Name-Calling Week:

How can i get this week in my school and actuly happen?
Dear Thomas: Another good question, thanks. Check out the National No Name-Calling Week website for information about how you and your school can get involved. Remember, it’s not limited to one week a year. Once the movement catches on, we can put a dent in this antisocial behavior. Good luck.
