Several states require student athletes to submit to random drug tests during the season for steroids.  Illinois may expand their program to postseason and include more players statewide.

A bill passed the Illinois Senate in May, 2009 and was sent to the Governor for signing. Once a law, 25% of the state’s public high schools would be testing their athletes for performance-enhancing drugs. Coaches and trainers would be required to learn how to recognize the signs of substance abuse.

If an athlete tests positive, the penalty is a one-year suspension from sports. If the student completes a drug-education program and provides a clean drug test, the time may be shortened to 90 days.
